Mr. Walter Gray Compton, Jr., age 92, of Goldsboro, North Carolina, went to his Heavenly home on Sunday (September 2, 2018) at Kitty Askins Hospice House in Goldsboro. Born September 24, 1925 in Drill, Virginia, he was a son of the late Walter Gray Compton, Sr. and Mary B. Smith Compton. He had spent his early life in southwest Virginia, moving to Ohio where he resided for sixty-two years, prior to moving to Goldsboro, North Carolina eleven years ago. Walter was a 1943 graduate of Council High School and was drafted into the Army to serve his country during World War II. He served in the 94th Infantry Division and participated in the Southern France and Germany campaigns. He and his combat unit were awarded the Purple Heart for their sacrificial service. Upon his discharge from the Army, he attended night school, studying tool and die design and began his career as a tool/die maker at Chrysler Air Temp, where he worked for thirty-two years. A devoted Christian, Walter and his wife, Ada were founding members of the Huber Heights First Baptist Church in Huber Heights, Ohio, where he served as a deacon, Junior Boys Sunday School Teacher and was one of the founders of the Royal Ambassadors program. After moving to Goldsboro, North Carolina, he and Ada joined Rosewood First Baptist Church. He and his son, Garry owned and operated Compton Christmas Tree Farm, Inc. Walter was many things to many people, a Scottish Rite Mason, self-taught mechanic, who could disassemble and reassemble a tractor without an owner’s manual, a friend, a loving companion to his wife and the best father/grandfather ever. He will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Claude B. Compton, Curtis Compton, Ralph Compton and Kenneth Compton; one infant sister, Violet Ruth Compton and two sisters-in-law, Elsie Compton and Margie Compton.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-eight years, Ada Smith Compton, his special angel caregiver; two children, Garry D. Compton of Ohio and Barbara Morgan of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Jason B. Compton and Lisa, Heather Reiss and Jason, Amy Hobbins and Jeffrey Moore, and Aaron Morgan and Amber; eleven great-grandchildren, Evan Reiss, Caden Reiss, Sydney Reiss, Braeden Reiss, Keaton Winkler, Rylan Hobbins, Beckham Moore, Landon Morgan, Lily Morgan, Drew Compton, and Tyler Compton; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Compton and Virginia Compton; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 Noon Saturday at the Corinth Baptist Church in Council, Virginia, with Rev. H.G. Musick, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A Mountain, Virginia. Military Graveside Honors will be conducted by Childs-Gentry Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7360 of Grundy, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Jason Reiss, Evan Reiss, Caden Reiss, Jerry Morgan, Jason Compton, and Aaron Morgan.
The family will receive friends at the Corinth Baptist Church from 11 AM until the funeral hour.
