James “Curtis” Compton, age 93, of the Combs Ridge section of Council, Virginia went to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday (February 23, 2017) at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee. Born June 25, 1923 in Drill, Virginia, he was a son of the late Walter and Mary B. Smith Compton. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a hardworking man; he worked for many years with his brothers doing construction and later became employed by the Buchanan County School System as a maintenance worker for over twenty-five years. Although he was a hard worker, his true passions were God, his family, gardening, camping and his loving wife of seventy years. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant sister, Ruth and two brothers, Ralph Compton and Claude Compton.
Survivors include his loving wife, Pauline Combs Compton; two daughters, Joann Ratliff and husband, Don of Vansant, Virginia and Joyce Smith and late husband, Ron of Abingdon, Virginia; grandchildren, Jackie Green and husband, Brian of Oceola, Indiana, Jennifer Ratliff of Vansant, Virginia, Todd Smith and fiancée, Robin of Lebanon, Virginia, Amanda Owens and husband, Fabian of Lebanon, Virginia and Jessica Bailey and husband, Bo of Mendota, Virginia; eight great-grandchildren, Austin Smith, Morgan (Smith) Booher, Danielle Watson, Sydney Bailey, Ethan Owens, Braedyn Bailey, Broadie Bailey and Lydia Owens; one great-great-grandson is due in June and will bear his name; two brothers, Walter “Junior” Compton and wife, Ada of North Carolina and Kennith Compton and wife, Virginia of Council, Virginia; many nieces and nephews and extended family also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 PM Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Carl Burmeier officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 PM Sunday at Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon, Virginia. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at Honaker Funeral Home by 1:30 to travel in the funeral procession.
Pallbearers will be Gary Price, Fabian Owens, Jordan Booher, Bo Bailey, Todd Smith, Austin Smith, Ethan Owens, Braedyn Bailey, Broadie Bailey and Brian Green.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carlos Blankenship, Herman Compton and members of the Corinth Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 5 PM Saturday.
