Mr. David Lee “Stretch” Smith, age 60 of Rowe, Virginia passed away Saturday (November 12, 2016) at his home surrounded by his family. Born December 22, 1955 in Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a son of Ruth Helton Smith of Rowe, Virginia and the late Arvil Lee Smith. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a 1974 graduate of Garden High School at Oakwood, Virginia and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. He worked as a coal miner at Consol for over twenty-eight years and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Janet Sue Tomblin, Teresa Lynn “Tater” VanDyke and Kellie Dawn Smith; father-in-law, Lee Deel; nephew, D.J. Shortridge; maternal grandparents, Jake and Gaye Helton and paternal grandparents, Johnson and Catherine Smith.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife of thirty-one years, Sherri Deel Smith of the home; one son, David Lee Smith, Jr. of the home; one sister, Sonia Smith Fuller and husband, Randall of Rowe, Virginia; one brother, Marty Wayne Smith and wife, Erica of Little Mountain, South Carolina; mother-in-law, Alice Deel of Vansant, Virginia; two special sons at heart, Walter Cook and Hunter Cook; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff, doctors and nurses on 3rd floor I.M.U. at Bristol Regional Medical Center, 5th floor staff of Select Specialty of Bristol; the staff of Virginia Medical and Respiratory and special friends, Ronnie and Diane Cook.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Thursday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Edward Tiller and Rev. Carl Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Mickey Smith, Matthew Smith, Hunter Cook, Walter Cook, Richard Justus, Mark Street and Terry Deel.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Dawson, Alex Tomblin, Christopher Cayton, Danny Shortridge, Brandon Hankins, Clifford Ramey, Bubby Ramey, Danny Robinson, Dave Miller and Rachael Davis.
The family will receive friends after 6 PM Wednesday at the Honaker Funeral Home where an evening service will be conducted at 7 PM with Rev. Leonard Meadows officiating.
