Obituary for Harley Estel Owens

Mr. Harley Estel Owens, age 70, of Swords Creek, Virginia, passed away Monday (November 12, 2018) in a Tazewell, Virginia hospital. Born December 29, 1947 in Richlands, Virginia, he was a son of the Alice Webb Owens of Claypool Hill, Virginia and the late Grady Owens. He had spent most of his life in the Russell County, Virginia area and was a 1967 graduate of Honaker High School. A Vietnam war veteran, he had proudly served his country in the United States Army. He had formerly been employed as a service technician with Bucyrus Mining Equipment and loved to discuss mining with colleagues and friends. He had a passion for the outdoors, spending his summers hiking the Appalachian Trail and was a Scout Master with Boy Scouts of America.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Freda Owens of the home; one son, Estel Owens and wife, Jennifer of Princeton, West Virginia; one grandson, Garrett Owens; one sister, Loretta Penrod and husband, Chuck of Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Steve Ray officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia.
Military graveside honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon, Virginia.
Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Friday.
