Carson Brown, 86 years of age of Bristol, Virginia passed from this life on August 5th after an extended illness. Born October 27, 1931 in Swords Creek, Virginia, Carson was the son of the late Bert Garfield and Harriett Lowe Brown In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Betty Ratliff Brown and sister Myrtle Lee Whitt. Carson was a graduate of Garden High School, Oakwood, Va. He and Betty made their home at Garden Creek where he was co-owner and operator of Pinemont Milk Company. His colorful business mind carried him into owning a grocery store when he was only 14 while living on Drill Mountain with his parents. He later owned two other grocery stores, co-owned and operated a door-to-door milk business. After moving to Russell County, he went into the cafeteria restaurant business—The Country House and also the Shiloh; later, the Oaks Motel and Restaurant in the Rosedale community. He was also instrumental in getting First Bank and Trust Co going with the original name of First Russell County Bank & Trust.
When he & Betty moved to Russell Co, in their love for the Lord, they opened their home where the Rosedale church of Christ was started. The group later moved into their small, refinished barn on their farm. His membership remained there where he served for the rest of his 48 years.
He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle.
Carson had a zest for life as reflected in his final weeks. Though his body was frail and tired, his mind and spirit were determined to live life to the fullest. He lived on his terms and was happy. Carson was known for his wit, humor and funny stories. With a sharp mind, he had an unwavering quick comeback that always made him a pleasure to be around. To the end, his positive outlook and sense of humor remained with him.
Carson had great talent in music and poetry. He wrote lyrics and music for several songs, bringing his own style to country genre. His grandson Chad recently surprised him by composing and recording a collection of his grandfather’s songs from his Nashville studio. His lyrics always told a story about life and love, while reflecting the incredible joy he felt for life. Some of his song titles include: Memories, Living In the Country , Lonesome, Hurtin' Don't Hurt Anymore, and Two-Timing.
Carson had a lifelong passion for horses. Raising and breeding Saddlebred horses, his favorite horse was his Champion stallion named Willie.

Carson was the wise patriarch of a family that treasured and loved him deeply. He is survived by three daughters: Barbara Dill and husband Gregory of Melbourne, FL; Kathy Brown of Bristol, VA, and Regina Mullins of Bristol, VA; five grandchildren: Rebecca Schroeder (husband Dallas) of Elizabeth, CO; Sarah Kowalsky (husband Clay) of Mooresville, IN; Jason Maggard (wife Lindsay) of Bristol, VA; and Joshua Maggard of Carey, NC; Chad Brown of Nashville, TN; and 13 great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews and a host of friends also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday evening, Aug 8 at the Honaker Funeral Home, Honaker, Va at 7 pm with ministers Gregory Dill, and Jim Hill. Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday at Ratliff Family Cemetery on Youngs’ Branch, Oakwood, Virginia.
The family will receive friends after 6:00 PM Wednesday.
