Obituary for David Woodrow Honaker

David Woodrow Honaker
Mr. David Woodrow Honaker, age 72, of Rosedale, Virginia, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday (May 18, 2018) at his home. Born November 1, 1945 in Lebanon, Virginia, he was a son of the late Ivan and Lola Jones Honaker. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a 1964 graduate of Honaker High School, where he began playing football. Upon graduation from high school, he attended Concord College in Athens, West Virginia, where he continued to play football as he pursued higher education. He was later drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly served his country and played on the Army Football Team. Football was more than just a hobby for him; he loved the game so much that he devoted thirty-seven years of volunteer work to the Honaker High School Football Staff, helping the younger generation develop their skill and passion for the sport as well.
Life to David was more than just football though. He was a loving husband, father, papaw, uncle and great friend. A retired coal miner, he was employed by Pittston Coal Company for many years. He had a loving passion for life and helping others, as evidenced in his famous walking sticks (which are now part of almost every home in the community). Each walking stick contained David’s trademark engraving, P.T.B.Y.F. meaning, “Proud to be your Friend”. A true friend he was! He lived each day to the fullest and enjoyed giving back to his community. He was a member of Rosedale Baptist Church in Rosedale, Virginia, where he enjoyed sharing fellowship with other Christians as they served the Lord together.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three nephews, Michael “Bubby” Bostic, Jeremiah Honaker and Derek Cabell and one sister-in-law, Chris Cabell.
Survivors include his wife of forty-five years, Joyce Cabell Honaker of the home; two sons, Scott Honaker and wife, Jennifer of Rosedale, Virginia and Josh Honaker and fiancée, Natasha Johnson of Lebanon, Virginia; one brother, Jimmy Honaker and wife, Vickie of Abingdon, Virginia; three grandchildren, Dalton Honaker, Braelyn Honaker and Annabella Honaker; mother-in-law, Charlotte Cabell of Kingsport, Tennessee; one special aunt, Della Jones of Rosedale, Virginia; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and a host of friends also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Tuesday at Rosedale Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Kinder, Rev. Justin Honaker and Rev. Larry Burton officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia with Rev. Mike McFarlane officiating. Military graveside honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Dalton Honaker, Brent Rasnake, Brandon Rasnake, Stephen Bostic, Blake Bostic, Bryson Bostic, John Dye, Adam Cabell and Doug Hubbard.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Hale, Harless Breeding, Cecil Dye, Mick Bostic, Butch Tritt, former and present Honaker High School Football Players and Coaching Staff.
The family will receive friends after 6 PM Monday at the Rosedale Baptist Church, 352 Oakvale Avenue, Rosedale, Virginia 24280 where an evening service will be conducted at 7 PM with Rev. J.C. Steele officiating.
