Mrs. Willie Dee Smith, age 85, of Swords Creek, Virginia, passed away Tuesday (May 15, 2018) in a Richlands, Virginia nursing facility. Born April 2, 1933 in Raven, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Elbert and Hermie Artrip Palmer. She had spent most of her life in the southwest Virginia area and was a member of City of the Hill. She was a 1951 graduate of Honaker High School and a 1971 graduate of Clinch Valley College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Upon her graduation, she became an educator within the Russell County School System teaching 4th grade at Swords Creek Elementary School and retiring after thirty-nine years of service.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Smith, and two brothers, Herbert Palmer and Wayne Palmer.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Lambert of Doran and Tracy Daly and husband, Thomas of Summerville, South Caorlina; two granddaughters, Jamie Burke and husband, James and Rachel Patton and husband, B.J.; five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Burke, Tabitha Burke, Allyson Burke, Brennan Patton, and Ethan Patton; one brother, Rodney Palmer; four sisters, Mary Binder, Peggy Scott, Janet Abney, and Joann Irwin; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Commonwealth Assisted Living, Richlands Home Care, Legacy Hospice, and special friend, Mendy Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday at the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Barry Absher and Rev. Bobby Adkins officiating. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to City on the Hill Building Fund, P.O. Box 189, Cedar Bluff, VA 24609.
Pallbearers will be Tom Daly, B.J. Patton, James A. Burke, James R. Burke, Bill Patton, and Travis Mitchell.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 1:00 PM Friday.
